Bert Mertens' art consists of questioning the real. The freedom he takes and grants) lies in reclaiming the autonomy to examine, interpret and admire the visible in depth. His work never seeks to be sensational; on the contrary, it invites us to pay closer attention to ordinary appearances. This reveals an unsuspected complexity, tenderness or humour.
